The GTA 6 Game Informer cover story went live, and it is comfortably the largest single batch of Rockstar-sanctioned detail since the Extended Look aired on August 27. Issue 382 runs 14 pages, carries 12 new screenshots, and, crucially, puts named Rockstar developers on the record for the first time in months. Here is everything that moved from rumour to confirmed.
The map, finally quantified
Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut gave the number the community has argued over for three years: Leonida is about twice the size of GTA 5's map. It is Rockstar's largest world to date, and Garbut framed the jump as one of density rather than raw acreage, saying the team "obsessed about every part, the rooftops, the alleys, the interiors and everything in between."
That figure matters because it is lower than the popular fan estimate. Community mapping projects had settled on roughly 2.4x to 2.7x based on trailer landmark triangulation. Garbut's "about twice" is the first figure with a Rockstar name attached, so it now supersedes the fan math. Our fuller breakdown of the discrepancy is in the official map size piece.
The six regions were reconfirmed: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Terrain types named in the feature include swamps, beaches, abandoned tourist attractions, industrial zones and open countryside.
Hurricanes are in the game
The biggest genuinely new system: tropical storms and hurricanes strike Leonida. A Rockstar VP identified in coverage as Owen Shepherd described storm conditions as "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain," with water visibly running off rooftops and structures and heavy lightning.
The underlying change is architectural. Weather has been re-engineered to be localised and persistent rather than a single global state. That means sun on one side of the map while rain falls on the other, puddles and wet surfaces that stay wet after the rain stops, and rainbows when conditions line up. A rebuilt wind system moves hair, debris, water surfaces and swamp grass.
This is the confirmation that retires a long-running speculation thread. Our pre-confirmation analysis of what a Florida storm season could look like is preserved in the storm season breakdown, and the confirmed mechanics now sit alongside the weather system overview.
170-plus animal species
Michael Kane, described in coverage as Rockstar's VP of dynamic art, put the wildlife count at over 170 species across land, air and sea. The breakdown reported from the feature:
| Category | Confirmed count |
|---|---|
| Total species | 170-plus |
| Bird types | 60-plus |
| Land mammals | 30-plus |
| Fish and reptiles | Included, no count given |
Species named outright include alligators, manatees, flamingos, pelicans, iguanas, cane toads, armadillos and rhesus macaques, with sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish in the water. Coverage also describes a tracking system sorting animals into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary tiers, which is the first hint that wildlife is a progression layer and not just set dressing.
The Heat system
The six-star wanted system returns, but it now sits on top of a Heat layer. Police build a picture of you from what you look like and where the crime happened, which means changing clothes or swapping vehicles is a legitimate evasion tactic rather than a cosmetic choice. That slots directly into the information-driven wanted rework the Extended Look introduced, covered in the rebuilt wanted system explainer.
Car theft got more detail too. High-end vehicles need specialised tools, and expensive cars carry trackers and security systems. The WAiNK app scans a target and shows its security tier, resale value and registration cost before you commit. More on that in the car theft and WAiNK piece.
Activities, NPCs and the relationship system
Confirmed side activities from the feature: base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street racing, off-road racing, zoo visits, air boating and jet skiing. Base jumping is the notable one, because no parachute mechanic had been confirmed before now.
On NPCs, the feature describes varied heights, body types and musculature, skin detail including freckles and tanning, culturally accurate tattoos, hairstyles and grooming tied to specific regional communities, and clothing that varies by location and weather. A dedicated dialogue writing team is mentioned.
The Jason and Lucia relationship is confirmed as optional and player-driven, shaped by dates, whether you answer calls and texts, and small gestures. It ranges from platonic to romantic, carries no gameplay bonuses, and influences story direction only. Fast travel is handled by the RydeMe rideshare service, complete with shared passengers and Snapmatic browsing during the ride.
What Issue 382 did not do
Keep expectations calibrated. This was a magazine feature, not a Rockstar Newswire post. It contained no PC announcement, no GTA Online detail, no performance-mode or frame-rate figures, no going-gold confirmation and no change to the release date. The 12 screenshots are stills, and a still cannot evidence a frame rate or prove a mechanic, a point worth holding onto as clips circulate. Our standing guidance on that is in how to read promotional screenshots.
November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S remains the date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the GTA 6 map officially twice the size of GTA 5's?
Yes, per Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North, it is "about twice the size" of GTA 5's map and Rockstar's biggest to date. Earlier fan estimates of 2.4x to 2.7x were community triangulation, not official figures.
Are hurricanes confirmed in GTA 6?
Yes. Issue 382 confirms tropical storms and hurricanes in Leonida, with localised and persistent weather replacing a single global weather state.
Did Game Informer reveal anything about GTA Online or the PC version?
No. Neither was mentioned. Rockstar has still announced nothing about multiplayer or a PC release.
How many animals are in GTA 6?
Over 170 species, including 60-plus bird types and 30-plus land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and marine life.
The Bottom Line
Issue 382 delivered more hard, attributable detail than any beat since the Extended Look, and it did it the way Rockstar cover stories always do: by deepening systems rather than announcing new ones. The map number is now official and slightly smaller than fans assumed. Hurricanes, 170-plus species and the Heat layer are the real headlines. Everything still missing, PC, multiplayer, frame rate, going gold, is still missing, and with 50 days to launch that list is getting conspicuous.
