Everything you learned about how to lose the cops in GTA 6 from playing GTA 5 is close to worthless. In Los Santos, escape was a geometry problem: break line of sight, leave the search circle, wait out the timer. In Leonida it is an information problem. The police are hunting a description, and you beat them by making that description wrong.

This is a playbook built strictly from mechanics Rockstar confirmed during preview week. Nothing here is invented, and where something is unknown it is flagged as unknown.

The Rule Everything Else Follows From

A crime must be witnessed by an NPC or picked up by an alarm before police are alerted at all. No witness, no alarm, no response.

Once alerted, officers receive a description covering your face, clothes and vehicle. The HUD shows separate indicators for which of those details the police actually hold, and hollow stars mean they are searching without a description. That readout is the most important thing on your screen during a chase, because it tells you which problem to solve.

The full confirmed system is in the wanted system rebuild. What follows is how to use it.

Before the Job

Wear a mask. A mask worn during a job can stop police ever learning your face, even where CCTV is present. This is the single highest value preparation step in the confirmed system, because a face is the one description component you cannot change afterwards without changing your hairstyle.

Stock the trunk. Spare clothes in your car are a functional system, not a cosmetic one. If police have a clothing description, only a full outfit change clears it. Sunglasses do not work. A different hat does not work. Half measures fail by design, which makes a prepared trunk the difference between a two minute escape and a lost hour. Our customisation guide covers the wardrobe side.

Pick the right car to steal. The WAINK phone app scans a vehicle before you commit and reports value, lock status, alarm status and whether it carries a GPS tracker. Tracked cars phone your position to police unless you outrun the signal or dump them. Do not take a tracked car to a job. Details in car theft and security tiers.

Think about who is nearby. A quiet street means the crime may generate no alert at all. A crowded one guarantees witnesses.

During the Chase

Read the star shape first. Hollow stars mean police are looking without a description. That is the best position you can be in and it means the answer is distance and cover, not disguise. Filled indicators tell you which component to attack.

Get out of the dense city if you can. Escaping at three stars or higher inside Vice City has been described as brutal, because narrow streets and dense traffic work against you rather than for you. Vice City's own geography is the strongest police asset in the game. Our Vice City guide is a useful map primer.

Use the environment. Environmental destruction is confirmed: shooting out a pursuing car's tyres flips and crashes it. That is a real pursuit tool, not a stunt.

Split up. If police are hunting a couple, Jason and Lucia separating divides the response. This has no equivalent in any previous GTA and it is the most underrated confirmed mechanic in the game. Two smaller pursuits are usually easier than one large one.

After the Chase

Ditch the vehicle. A recognised car lowers your attention level the moment it is gone. If the car was tracked, dumping it is not optional.

Change your hairstyle to clear an appearance description. This is confirmed and specific. Hairstyle clears appearance. Accessories do not.

Change your full outfit to clear a clothing description. Again, complete change only.

Do not go loud. The Criminal Profile is a professional versus sloppy axis rather than a moral one. A clean robbery with nobody killed raises it. Excessive violence lowers it. Fighting your way out of a wanted level is the expensive option in a game where Rob Nelson explicitly said the player should not feel overpowered and that you are not the only one capable of violence. See the Criminal Profile system.

What Is Not Known

Be honest about the gaps. Rockstar has not said whether descriptions expire over time, whether there is any pay off or bribe mechanic, what the sixth star actually involves, whether safehouses clear heat, or whether spray shops exist in the GTA 5 sense. Any guide claiming certainty on those points is guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still hide in an alley and wait out the timer?

Unknown for GTA 6. The confirmed system is built around descriptions rather than search radii, and nothing Rockstar has said confirms a straightforward wait out mechanic.

Do masks work against CCTV?

Yes. A mask worn during a job can prevent police from ever learning your face even with camera coverage, which is confirmed.

Does changing clothes in the trunk work mid chase?

Rockstar confirmed trunk clothing storage as a way to change your outfit after committing a crime. Whether it can be done while actively pursued has not been demonstrated.

Is six stars really in the game?

Yes, a six star wanted level is confirmed. GTA 5 capped at five. What the sixth tier brings has not been described.

The Bottom Line

Losing the cops in GTA 6 is preparation more than driving. Mask up before the job, keep a change of clothes in the trunk, avoid tracked cars, and know that a hairstyle beats an appearance description while a hat does not. With 80 days to the November 19 launch, this is the confirmed picture, and it will be worth revisiting once players actually have controllers in hand.
