If GTA 6 really does require PS5 firmware 14.10 or later, as a datamine of the release build reportedly indicates, then the single most boring piece of launch prep just became the most important one. Updating a PlayStation 5 takes minutes when it is nearly current and the better part of an evening when it is not, and the moment you find out which you are dealing with should not be preload day.
Here is the full checklist, in the order that saves you the most time.
Step 1: Check what firmware you are actually on
From the home screen: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The system software version is listed there.
What you are looking for:
- 14.10.00.00 or higher: nothing to do. You are on the reportedly required version or newer.
- 14.00.xx: one update behind. A single download will clear it.
- 13.x or lower: you have been offline or deliberately not updating. Budget real time for this.
- Anything from 2025 or earlier: expect a sequence of updates with restarts in between.
To update: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Leave Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically switched on afterwards, so you are not doing this again in November.
One note on the firmware story itself: the 14.10 requirement is a datamine, not an announcement. Rockstar has published no PS5 system requirements. We covered what is and is not established in our report on the reported 14.10 requirement. Updating is sensible regardless, because no modern game ships supporting two-year-old system software.
Step 2: Do the storage maths before you need to
Rockstar has not published a final install size. What is known is the shape of the problem: a game roughly twice the map size of GTA 5, built for SSD streaming, launching in an era where 100-plus gigabyte installs are standard rather than exceptional.
Plan for a large number and leave headroom. The PS5's internal SSD gives you less usable space than the sticker says, and a drive filled to the last few gigabytes also makes the console's own housekeeping slower.
Practical moves, cheapest first:
- Audit your installed games. Settings > Storage > Installed. Sort by size. The three biggest live-service titles on most consoles account for more space than everything else combined.
- Move rather than delete. A USB drive can hold PS5 games in cold storage; they cannot be played from it, but moving them back is far faster than redownloading.
- Clear saved data you do not need. Minor, but free.
- Add an M.2 drive if you are doing this permanently. Our storage upgrade guide covers the compatibility requirements and installation.
Do this in October. Freeing 150 gigabytes is a calm Saturday task now and a panic on November 12.
Step 3: Get your account and pre-order in order
Three things to verify, all of which take two minutes and all of which have ruined someone's launch day:
- The pre-order is on the account you will actually play on. Sounds obvious. It is the single most common launch-day support ticket for big releases, usually involving a family account or a region-swapped store account.
- Your Rockstar Games Social Club account is set up and linked. Not strictly required for single player as far as anything announced, but worth doing in advance rather than during a launch-day server crush. See our Rockstar account setup guide.
- Two-factor authentication is on and your recovery email works. A locked account on November 19 is a bad day.
Step 4: Know the preload timing
Digital preload begins November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. That window exists precisely so that millions of simultaneous downloads do not all happen on launch day, and you should use it on day one of the window rather than day six.
Two things worth knowing about preload:
- Preloaded games sit on your drive locked until unlock time. The space is consumed from November 12, which is why Step 2 comes first.
- A day-one patch is likely on top of the preload. Rockstar has announced nothing, but it is the norm for releases of this scale, so leave a little extra room and a little extra time. Our day-one patch expectations piece has the detail.
Physical buyers: boxes contain a download code, not a disc, so the same preload and storage planning applies to you. The disc timing has been reported as months later, around December 2026, and is not confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What PS5 firmware does GTA 6 need?
Reportedly 14.10.00.00 or later, based on a datamine of the release build. This is not an official Rockstar or Sony figure, but any console on current system software comfortably clears it.
How much space should I set aside for GTA 6?
Rockstar has not announced an install size. Leave generous headroom beyond whatever figure eventually gets confirmed, and remember the day-one patch will want space of its own.
When can I start downloading GTA 6?
Preload opens November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. The download is locked until unlock time in your region.
Do I need PlayStation Plus to play GTA 6?
Not for single player. Nothing about any online component has been announced in any form, so no subscription requirement has been established beyond the standard rule that online play needs PS Plus. See our PS Plus and Game Pass explainer.
The Bottom Line
None of this is exciting and all of it is the difference between playing on November 19 and troubleshooting on November 19. Check your firmware tonight, free your storage this month, verify the pre-order is on the right account, and preload on the 12th rather than the 18th. Forty-six days is plenty of time, right up until it is not.
